Born in the Kapoor family, she is the daughter of Babita and Randhir Kapoor and the younger sister of Karisma Kapoor. She has won several awards, including seven Filmfare Awards. In a recent interview with Gillian Anderson for the Dirty Magazine, she spoke about the difference between the Indian audience and the West.

Kareena Kapoor Khan on the viewing intimacy as a human experience

Kareena Kapoor Khan has rarely performed an intimate scene on screen in her career, which has spanned over two decades. While she has previously shared her reasons for the same in a different light, the actress now reflected on the difference between how the Indian audience and the audience in the West perceive intimacy. She stated:

“I personally feel like it’s not important to take a story forward. It’s not something that I feel is required in the narrative to show that. I know that I might not be comfortable doing that on screen. I never have done it. It’s just the way we look at the whole idea. We don’t look at sexuality or sex as a human experience.

In the same conversation, Kareena Kapoor Khan shared how one needs to respect intimacy a lot more before one puts it on screen. She added that India was not as open about sex as the people in the West were. She further compared how female desire was openly explored in the western countries while it was not the same in India. She stated:

“We have to start looking at and respecting that a lot more before we put it on screen. It’s my belief. Where I am coming from is the fact that we are still not as open as you are, having the narrative out there for you to experience so freely. While female desire is openly tackled in the West, it has always been so open about it.”

The Indian cinema has not yet forgotten Kareena Kapoor Khan’s role in the 2003 film, Chameli. In the same conversation, she revealed how the role helped her tap into her own confidence and sensuality at a young age. She added that the role pushed her to be fearless and more willing to explore darker, challenging topics even after 25 years in the film industry.

Kareena Kapoor said she won’t do intimate scenes in her films

Kareena Kapoor Khan has previously shared why she won’t do intimate scenes in her film. Back in 2003, after the release of Chameli, Kareena sat for a candid chat with Syed Firdaus Ashraf, who compared her portrayal of ‘Chameli’ to that of Waheeda Rehman’s iconic performance as ‘Gulabo’ in Pyaasa. Some insider critics had criticised the film for lacking sex appeal. Kareena addressed these comments during the interview and responded to the critics by saying:

“When trade people saw Chameli, they were like, ‘Arre Chameli mein thoda sex missing tha.’ They don’t understand that in Pyaasa, Waheedaji was not doing sex scenes. I am sorry, you cannot expect Raj Kapoor’s granddaughter to do those kind of scenes.”
