Amy Robach and T.J. Holmes revealed they planned to use Tom Brady and Gisele Bündchen’s divorce as a roadmap to their own respective splits before their romance was exposed.
“That was the model I was trying to follow,” Robach, 51, said during the Thursday, January 23, episode of her and Holmes’ “Amy & T.J.” podcast, referring to Brady, 47, and Bündchen, 44, confirming their split and finalized divorce at the same time in October 2022.
Robach recalled thinking to herself, “Before I announce it to everyone, including some of my friends, I want to have the divorce actually already be filed in the court so that the messiness is over.”
The journalist said she wanted to “deal with [it] personally, and then by the time I announce it, things are cool and calm, and we’re all good.” She noted, “That was my goal.”

Holmes, 47, called Brady and Bündchen’s “model” his “goal” as well when he was working through the end of his marriage to Marilee Fiebig.
He remembered the retired NFL player and the model announcing, “We are breaking up” and then they clarified, “‘Oh, actually, the divorce is final. It’s done.’ That was the way they went about.”
Brady and Bündchen sparked split speculation in fall 2022 after more than a decade together. However, they remained quiet about their status until the divorce was finished that October.
“In recent days, my wife and I finalized our divorce from one another after 13 years of marriage,” Brady wrote via Instagram in October 2022. “We arrived at this decision amicably and with gratitude for the time we spent together. We are blessed with beautiful and wonderful children who will continue to be the center of our world in every way. We will continue to work together as parents to always ensure they receive the love and attention they deserve.”

The former New England Patriots quarterback — who shares son Benjamin, 15, and daughter Vivian, 12, with Bündchen — noted that it was a “painful and difficult” decision to end their marriage, but the exes wished “only the best” for each other and their new lives. The way in which Brady and Bündchen — who is now pregnant with her and boyfriend Joaquim Valente’s first baby — announced their separation was quick and concrete. That format is what both Robach and Holmes wish had transpired in their own past divorces.

“When you announce to people that you’re breaking up, people usually want to weigh in,” Robach told podcast listeners. “So once you already say, ‘hey guys, it’s a done deal,’ there’s no room for discussion.”
She explained: “And I think by the time you get to that point, you’ve already made your mind up and you don’t really want to hear what everyone else thinks about it. And so that makes a lot of sense to me.”
While Robach wanted to have a swift ending to her marriage from Andrew Shue, their breakup was anything but clean. (Robach and Shue, 57, don’t share any children together, but they each have kids from prior relationships.)
Robach and Holmes sparked romance speculation in November 2022 when they were photographed getting cozy outside of their place of work, GMA3: What You Need to Know. At the time, both journalists were married, which raised eyebrows among fans and ABC, which eventually let them both go.
Robach and Holmes proceeded to file for divorce after the scandal made headlines despite claiming both marriages were already over when they started seeing each other.
Holmes filed for divorce from Fiebig, with whom he shares daughter Sabine, in December 2022. Their legal battle was finalized the next year. Robach, meanwhile, was declared legally single in 2023.

Us Weekly confirmed in December 2023 that Shue and Fiebig began dating after their respective divorces and that they are “happy together.”
Holmes and Robach, meanwhile, are wearing matching Aura rings to track their exercise habits and aren’t opposed to eloping someday.
Robach revealed on Thursday that after her mom asked if she and Holmes were “secretly married,” she confessed that a quiet exchange of vows isn’t off the table.
“I did tell her, I said, ‘Well, funny enough, if and when it does happen, that’s probably how it will happen. You’ll find out after the fact,’” Robach said. “I said, ‘It’s probably going to be one of those moments where you get a phone call from me. But I won’t keep you in the dark for too long.’”
