Zayed Khan Shares Having Financial Burden At Home, ‘House Was Mortaged, Dad Had A Fire Accident’


When one thinks of Bollywood actor, Zayed Khan, all that his fans can remember is ‘Lucky’ a.k.a ‘Laxman Prasad Sharma’ from Shah Rukh Khan, Sushmita Sen’s Main Hoon Na. However, did you know that in his real life, Zayed had faced immense trauma? He and his family had faced a financial crisis when Zayed’s dad, Sanjay Khan, got injured in a fire accident. Hell broke loose on Zayed’s family when a major fire broke down on the sets of Sanjay Khan’s The Sword of Tipu Sultan back in 1989. Sanjay had received third-degree burns, underwent 74 surgeries, and his family faced financial loss.

Zayed Khan shares that his home was mortgaged to cope with the financial situation

When Sanjay Khan was injured on the sets of The Sword of Tipu Sultan, 52 crew members lost their lives. All this took place due to the lack of firefighting equipment. Zayed, in a latest interview with Siddharth Kanan, shared that the fire accident had not only left Sanjay with third-degree burns but they financial loss and had to mortgage their home. They had to sell off their cars, compromise with their standard of living to deal with the situation. The actor noted:

“Like take autos, sell cars and get into taxis — yes. Our house was mortgaged, and many other things. You truly see who your friends are during times like that. We got better cars again once we came out of the situation.”

Zayed Khan remembers that his mom and sisters suffered a lot due to the financial burden

For Zayed, his mom is God sent and bore the financial crisis like a warrior. He and his full family underwent distress as they faced a financial crunch, and a lot of lives were lost during the shooting of The Sword Of Tipu Sultan. He shared that his mother and sisters did undergo a lot of pain due to the challenging situation at home and remembered:

“My dad had a fire accident at that time, during Tipu Sultan. There was a lot of distress at home, and the way I saw my mother and sisters during that period really hurt me deeply. The family was extremely financially burdened at that time. A lot of people had passed away in that fire, and there was no insurance at the time. I saw a lot of pain in my mother and sisters and how they took up the mantle to support my father.”

When Zayed Khan’s parents thought of putting him in a boarding school

Things at Zayed’s home were not fine due to the financial loss. His parents had thought of putting him in a boarding school, as his mom had many mouths to feed. He also shared that he felt a lot of contentment and achievement when he gave his first paycheque to his mother from his debut movie. Well, on the other hand, Sanjay Khan, despite undergoing 74 surgeries and suffering third-degree burns, had completed the shooting of The Sword Of Tipu Sultan after he recovered.

On the work front, Zayed made his Bollywood debut with the movie, Chura Liyaa Hai Tumne. However, it was in the 2003 movie, Main Hoon Na, that he received worldwide love as his chemistry with Amrita Rao, Shah Rukh Khan gave him a universal fan base. Zayed is known for his charming screen presence and has done movies like Dus, Shabd, Fight Club, and Yuvvraaj.
