Emma Heming recalled how she learned to communicate with her children

Emma Heming told El Pais on June 14, 2026, that she did not prefer anyone following her or the other family members to get a picture of Bruce Willis. She said that it impacted all of them in some manner, and she wanted to protect her husband while allowing him to navigate the entire world without any trouble. However, Emma and Bruce were the parents of two young daughters when the latter’s health issues were found. Emma opened up on how she handled the situation and said:
“Bruce has three adult daughters, so I had to learn how to communicate with them about something that I was even still trying to come to terms with as well. We always feel like we make the world and everything be rainbows and unicorns for our children. But that’s not our world. And what we’re going through as a family with their father and his disease that’s not that world.”

Emma stated that she speaks to her children in an “age-appropriate way,” waiting for them to ask her something after she provides particular information. She said that although she gives an honest answer to her daughters, it is not easy for her at the same time. However, Emma said that she is satisfied with the fact that her replies make her children feel safe. She explained and continued:
“I’m not saying I do it perfectly all the time. I’m not a perfect caregiver. I’m not a perfect person. I’m not a perfect mom, of course. I think as caregivers and parents, we’re just trying to do the best that we can. And my daughters know that.”
Emma Heming said that her family expected a change after announcing the actor’s FTD diagnosis

Emma Heming is trending after the Spanish version of her book, The Unexpected Journey, was published recently. During her latest conversation with El Pais magazine on June 14, 2026, Emma recalled the time when Bruce’s FTD diagnosis was revealed to everyone. She said that it was a period when she and her family expected that people would start looking at dementia differently.

Furthermore, Emma also did not want her children to think that they needed to discuss their father’s health problem in a “hushed home,” making it sound like the secret of a family. Emma said:
“Bruce is so beloved and he has such a global reach. And I knew that this announcement could hopefully change what people perceive dementia to be. So I was really happy that we were able to get the support that our family needed. I am happy that we were able to share and make this conversation normalised.”
